Safe Communities, Safe Children
Safe Communities, Safe Children (SCSC) is our latest protective behaviours program based on our award-winning child protection work.
How does the program work?
With SCSC, we have incorporated the latest research on personal safety education, including the recommendations from the Royal Commission and the Australian Childhood Maltreatment Study. The program has a flexible delivery model (in-person or online) which makes it accessible for parents and carers as well as Educators. The aim of the program is to empower adults to implement key safety strategies with children in their lives.
The SCSC program takes a systemic approach to increase the confidence and competence of parents and carers to introduce and review personal safety skills with young children, by providing a protective framework for families.
It also quips Educators with the knowledge and skills to reinforced personal safety skills in preschool settings, further increasing the ripple effect of the program. This ensures that key support people in children’s lives are informed, aware, and able to access support if required.
Safe Communities, Safe Children includes:
-
The Educator Session is a 2 hour specialist professional development for early childhood professionals. It increases participant awareness of the early warning signs of abuse, supports quality mandatory reporting, and identifies ways Educators can reinforce personal safety skills with practical activities.
-
The Parent Session is a 2 hour information session that provides parents and carers with vital information about personal safety. Sessions aim to increase participant confidence in recognising risks for children at different stages, as well as build protective opportunities with their children that can be reinforced in practical ways with children as well as extended support people.
-
Our experienced facilitator leads three 1 hour sessions that involve parents and preschool age children learning alongside each other. The sessions involve a range of engaging activities to support families to embed personal safety concepts into their daily interactions. These groups can be provided in-person or online.

Who can benefit from the program?
The prevalence of reported child abuse in Australia is alarming. We know that child abuse happens behind closed doors and that many cases are never reported. That is why the aim of SCSC is to teach members of the community the important personal safety skills needed to keep our most vulnerable safe.Take a minute to write an introduction that is short, sweet, and to the point. If you sell something, use this space to describe it in detail and tell us why we should make a purchase. Tap into your creativity. You’ve got this.
SCSC can also be tailored to suit unique needs of participants. Versions of the program have been successfully delivered to families with children with disabilities, families affected by domestic and family violence and families from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
