Suicide Prevention, intervention, education, advocacy and support are issues that are important to CAPS Inc and that we as an organisation are committed to addressing.

Suicide is a tragedy that affects many Australian families and communities, often creating a never ending nightmare for those who are left behind. Life doesn't always go smoothly and sometimes, it all seems too much to bear. Recent statistics in Australia show that more than 2100 people a year take their own lives - this is more than die from traffic accidents. However, many of these deaths can be prevented.

Community Action for the Prevention of Suicide Inc. (CAPS Inc) is a not for profit incorporated association based in Toowong in Brisbane. CAPS is 100% self funded and aims to provide a practical non-clinical support service to coordinate care, attention and support for people at risk of suicide, those who are concerned for someone at risk, and the children of someone at risk. CAPS has recently earned entry onto the FaHCSIA Harm Prevention Register and has dedictible gift recipient status with the ATO.

Clinical and other support services, counselling and help lines exist, but there is no suicide prevention resource and support service that takes the hand of the suicidal person, coordinates appropriate care and attention and stays with them for as long as is necessary for their wellbeing to improve, to have their resilience and hope restored and a future sought.

CAPS hopes to have its new Suicide Prevention Resource and Support Service up and running soon. Read more about this pilot project.
